Why is PVC Used for Blood Bags?

Nov. 03, 2017

What are blood bags made of?

Blood bags made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that contain diethylhexyl phthalate(DEHP) pose a significant risk to human health and should be phased out in favour of safer alternatives, according to a life-cycle assessment of the impact of blood bags by an EU-funded researcher.

Why is pvc used for blood bags?

The materials must have a certain permeability to oxygen. Or the blood platelets will not survive. And it must not be too permeable to water. The bag must have sufficient heat resistance and therefore can be sterilized by steam before use. The material must not burst or tear in the centrifuge. When severely bent, it must be kept undamaged, should be flexible when pressed, and must be translucent to check whether the bag is filled with or not containing layers. In addition, the material should be cost-effective and therefore relatively easy to manufacture and weld with the required piping.

PVC meets all the requirements.
